Galle International College

GIC provides an environment where children feel safe, secure and happy to enable them to develop the self confidence to try new experiences without fear of failure.

Kindergarden

  • Little children arrive at school as unique individuals, shaped by their particular cultural and social backgrounds, and day to day experiences. Children will thrive within classrooms that meet their developmental needs, and that provide a secure, respectful and nurturing environment.

    Topic & Curriculum

This term our topic will be ‘Transport & Journeys’. Many activities have been planned for the children based on this topic. We will introduce different ways of traveling as well as new songs and games. We will also continue to develop knowledge and skills of letters through Jolly Phonics, the formation of simple words and exploring books as well as numbers, colours, shapes and an understanding of simple mathematical problem solving.

Kindergarten is a time for children to expand their love of learning, their general knowledge, their ability to get along with others and their interest in reaching out to the world. Our education program is set to meet all that and provide a nurturing environment.

  • Topic and Curriculum

This term we will be exploring and learning about the weather and we will become ‘weather experts’ by the end of the term! In mathematics, we will be learning about place value, addition and subtraction, money, multiplication and division.

Literacy will provide the children with an introduction to different texts including non- fiction texts. The science topic will be Light and Dark followed by electricity in the following half term.

    Homework

Homework will be sent home on a Monday for the children to complete. The children will have 2 weeks to complete the activities on their homework grid so please do not feel rushed to complete all of the activities. Please feel free to communicate with us using the homework diary. You may also contact me by e-mail: anna.thuiyadura@gmail.com

    Reading

Children will be issued with a new reading book when they are ready to move on to the next book in the scheme. We will be reading with the children in school, however, we would appreciate your support as much as possible by reading with your child daily at home. Please sign the reading record when you have read with your child.

    Spellings

This year, children will have the opportunity to use ‘Spelling Frame’ to help them learn their spellings each week. ‘Spelling Frame’ is an online tool whereby children can play various spelling games to help them gain confidence with their weekly spellings. Each child will be issued with a username and password by Miss Anna in order to access this website. `

Children will be issued with new spelling words on a Friday afternoon. They will then have 1 week to learn their spellings, ready for their spelling test the following Friday morning.

  • Topic and Curriculum

This term our new topic will be “Discovering the Rainforest”. We will start off the topic by looking at where are the rainforests located, where are the vegetation belts around the world and identifying the positions and the significance of latitude, longitude and the equator.

Mathematics will be taught daily, with regular maths rotation groups and an end of the week maths revision test to consolidate the students learning. This term we are building our number and place value knowledge, followed on with addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. Students will complete regular Mental Maths tests throughout the term along with other preparation for assessments.

We are following the Cambridge Curriculum for English. Reading will be a strong focus within lessons, which we strongly encourage children to continue at home. Children should read for 15 minutes each day at home. This can be a book, a magazine or anything that interests them. This term the children will look at Imaginary/Fantasy texts, information texts and humorous poems. As before, grammar, punctuation correct sentence structure and spelling will be taught and revised continuously throughout the term.

Science will be a super fun and engaging area for the students this term. We are looking at the human body, diving into unpacking our skeletal and muscular system. We are starting the term off by focusing on our skeleton and naming the main bones we have in our body.

Art will consist of colour mixing. Throughout the term the students will be hands on with investigating and mixing our primary and secondary colours. This will vary from shade pallets, colour washing and mixing tones.

    Homework

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you about the school homework policy. Each child has a homework diary which we would like you to sign weekly. All homework tasks should be recorded in the diary. We do expect the students to use their Reading Record Book to record all they read. The Diary can also be used for parent/teacher contact. Each week your child will have a list of spellings to learn. This list will be given to them each Monday and the spelling test will take place every Friday. The children will have the responsibility of learning these spellings and preparing for the test. Additional subject based homework will be sent home Monday-Thursday.

  • Topic and Curriculum

Literacy - This term we will explore three areas of literacy and language; persuasive writing, poetry and non-chronological reports. In persuasive writing students will be introduced to a range of language and written techniques that will develop their ability to write for a particular purpose an audience. Poetry will focus on kennets and list poems and will develop student’s language interpretation skills as well as their own poetic writings and constructions. Our final unit on non-chronological reports will lead to students writing formal articles/reports on key events from their time in Year 4 with the aim of creating a class yearbook.

Numeracy - We will continue to use the Whiterose Maths as the basis for our mathematics lessons. Students will study the following topics for approximately two weeks each; decimals, money, time, statistics and shape.

Topic - For the first 6 weeks our topic will be ‘Water’. Students will explore and experience water from both a scientific and practical perspective. Mostly, this unit fosters a curiosity about where water comes from and how we should not take it for granted. Following this, we will complete a six week study on Railways. This topic has more of an historical focus as students investigate how railway lines came to be and how they have evolved over time.

    Weekly Organisation

Like last term, Primary 4 will have PE on Monday morning and Swimming on Thursday. Please ensure that students come to school with the correct equipment and uniform for both days. They will continue to have their weekly ICT sessions with Miss Angela on a Wednesday and they have now commenced, with great joy, their science classes with Miss Sian on a Monday and Wednesday.

    Homework and Spelling Frame

Whilst there was no Homework or Spelling Frame in the first week, I will be re-introducing these to students from Week 2. Spelling words will be found on Spelling Frame and students can practise at home throughout the week. Please let me know if you have lost your Spelling Frame login. I will also send home the weekly homework tasks on a Monday, much like they are used to from Miss Hannah.
